How Do Particles Acquire Mass?

Can someone please explain the Higgs boson to a non-physicist like me?  That was my thought ever since the Higgs became the talk of the town early this week.  Lucky for me (and hopefully others) the New York Times has come to the rescue by providing a great interactive video explaining (and simplifying) the Higgs. Next in the “Dummies” series.  See it here.
