Bowman, Tournas Contribute to OECD Gene Editing Report

Faculty Fellow Diana Bowman, along with recent Center Scholar and graduate of the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law Lucy Tournas, contributed to a new report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) on therapeutic gene editing.

Gene Editing for Advanced Therapies: Governance, Policy and Society explores the scientific, legal, and ethical challenges facing the development of gene editing technology. Therapeutic gene editing has the potential to open up new treatments for HIV, certain types of cancer, viral infection, and genetic disease.

The report notes the primary challenges facing governance of gene editing technology include: the inability of traditional regulatory bodies and frameworks to keep up with the pace of technological change; the need for better regulatory coordination across borders; and the misuse of gene editing technology for unproven and unapproved purposes.
