Answer: color-changing nail polish, composed of chemicals that detect the presence of certain date rape drugs slipped into a drink, is in development at Undercover Colors. According to an article on CNET, the polish changes color when it comes in contact with liquids that have been altered with drugs like Rohypnol (roofies), Xanax and GHB (G-juice). All a wary gal has to do, is casually dip a manicured finger in her cocktail to determine whether to drink or dump. Nonetheless, a recent article in the Huffington Post elucidates that “[w]hile well intentioned, products like “Undercover Colors” actually perpetuate rape culture by placing the burden of safety back onto women.” The thing that has to continue to change for the better, according to the Huff Post article, is attitude, education and accountability — all factors that would appear to engage viable solutions to address the problem — not just how to avoid it.
