Dr. Diana Bowman and her team recently received a one million dollar grant from the National Science Foundation C-Accel Pilot to continue their work on adapting AI systems with safety and user ease in mind. The C-Accel Pilot intends to support fundamental research while also encouraging rapid advances through partnerships.
The project intends to develop new methodologies for training non-AI experts in autonomous systems, potentially leading to advances in explanations for autonomous behavior, as well as safety. The team will provide an on- the- job training ramp, which would enable the majority of the workforce to work with autonomous systems across various industries as well as facilitate the development of graded expertise levels through certification- based training programs. These programs share similarities to technical programs for automotive technicians.
